Relax: Let It All Hang Out!

 National Hang Out Day!

When I found out about Project Laundry List and National Hang Out Day, I was thrilled.  As a nonprofit organization, Project Laundry List dedicates itself to the Right-To-Dry Movement.  They advocate line drying your clothes and washing them in cold water.  The movement includes prohibiting homeowners associations {and the like} from banning your use of an outdoor clothesline.  Should someone's perception of tasteful aesthetics dictate your ability to hang-dry your clothes?

This hits home because a few years ago, we lived in an older house with no dryer.  In the backyard were two very old and huge oak trees so we tied a heavy-duty rope from one tree to the next.  I was used to using a dryer, but after a while the time that I spent outside hanging up our clothes became my "me" time.  It was quiet outside and the smell of nature was almost mesmerizing.  The feel of the warm sun stopped time for a moment.

Line-drying clothes outside saves energy and the environment.  During these hard times, saving some money tempts even the biggest believer in the dryer.  Also, did you know that lint is fibers from your clothes - meaning your clothes is wearing out?  No lint on a clothesline. The sun also serves as a fantastic whitener on my cloth diapers.  A little bit of lemon juice and a kiss from the sun and those diapers were {almost} good as new - no bleach or other chemicals needed.

Since finding out about Project Laundry List we started the conversation about reintroducing a clothesline in our backyard.  Hanging up the clothes was something that I did with my mom and grandmother when I was a kid.  I think back on these times with great nostalgia.  I thought it would be something that I could do with my girls.  At the very least, they can play in the backyard and I can hang the clothes - energy saving and efficient use of time.

Staying true to form, I have offered you some accessories for you to celebrate National Hang Out Day and they are made in the USA.  Ironically enough, though, I have yet to be able to find clothespins that are made in the USA.  If you know of any, please let me know.  Stop by Project Laundry List and see how you can get involved.  Or look into getting your own clothesline or dryer rack and have your picture posted on their Clothesline Map.

The Gift is in The Box

I think whiplash is setting in.  I cannot believe that Thanksgiving is in two days.  I have been trying to think about gifts for the girls.  In my search for products Made in the U.S.A., I came across a cottage at Crafty Kids Playhouses.  It's made out of 100% recycled cardboard!  How brilliant!  Lyla loves playing with boxes.  Doesn't really care what's in the box, just the box.  I keep telling my husband that someone should come up with an idea to sell a box for kids.  Well, ask and ye shall find.  This one goes on the list.
