Giving Back in December

 GiveBackBadge.jpg

We think of December as the holiday month.  We celebrate several religious holidays, the end of a year and we honor each other with gatherings and gifts.  This month also signifies the spirit of giving.  With that spirit in mind, this month's featured charity is Toys For Tots.
Since 1947, Toys For Tots has been providing a new toy for Christmas for less fortunate children.  Although Toys For Tots has always been "run" by the U.S. Marine Corps, it wasn't until 1995 that the Toys For Tots Foundation became "an official activity of the U.S. Marine Corps."

Toys For Tots is such a great organization to support. I think the kid in all of us wants to keep that innocence of the holidays alive and that's what this organization does through their toy donation drives. My respect for what they do increased ten-fold when (years ago) my office became a drop-off point for toys. The joy of seeing all of those toys - I can not even begin to tell you how much fun that was. Imagine how many children's lives are touched by these donations.  On the flip side too, imagine how many parents' and caregivers' lives are touched by these donations.  The moment deserves a happy sigh of relief.

If you want to find a local drop-off place to donate toys, please click here to do so.  If you want to make a monetary donation, please click here.  There are several other ways to make donations and the second link will also take you to the page to get that information.  Make a child's holiday more enjoyable by donating a toy.

Giving Back in October - Open Your Karma Bank

Thank you for reading this post.  I know that it has been a long time since I have posted a Giving Back post.  It has not been for lack of wanting to.  This month's charity represents a cause that is very near and dear to my heart.  As much as I would love for it to be to yours also, I hope it is not from personal experience.  This month's Featured Charity is Remembering Our Babies.

Giving Back in March

 GiveBackBadge.jpg

Today we mark the first of March and the first Friday of the month, which means it's time to feature another charity here.  I am so excited to feature this month's charity.  Without further ado, this month's featured charity is:

PetsforElderlyFoundationlogo

The Pets for the Elderly Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit charity that  helps pay the fees to participating animal shelters throughout the United States for senior citizens (age 60 and over) who adopt a companion dog or cat from a participating shelter — including pre-adoption veterinary exams and spay/neuter, if part of the adoption fee.

When I came across this charity, tears came to my eyes.  Many years ago, we gave my grandmother {who passed away a few years ago} a dog - a Pomeranian - to be her and my grandfather's daily companion.  The mission of this charity touches my heart so deeply that, as I write this post, tears come to my eyes because I think of my grandparents.  Words escape me to describe to you how much they meant to me in my life.

My grandparents
I confess that I was unsure about featuring this charity just because it unveiled some very personal feelings that I am not used to talking about, especially on a blog where my purpose is, in essence, about other people.  The topic of my grandparents is very sacred to me and one that I keep very close to my heart.  For that reason, though, I thought it was worth featuring them here.

Pets for the Elderly Foundation currently partners with animal shelters in 29 states.  Their goal is to underwrite these companion costs for shelters in all 50 states.  I had the pleasure of speaking to their Executive Director, Susan Kurowski, and she told me that they receive a donation from one of their first adopters.  It's for $2 per year.  {Yes, that is $2 per year.}  This donation is her way of giving back what she can to an organization that gave her so much.  {Here are some pictures of some of their recipients.}  If this wonderful lady is able to give that, I wonder how much money we can raise this month for so many others who need this companionship.  Ms. Kurowski told me that donations have been down and they have not been able to expand their services for this reason.  Let's see if we can help them with that.  Here is a link to their donate page and their home page.  On their home page, at the top right, you will see a link to Amazon.  Your purchase, through that link, helps support them also.

If you do make a donation, please leave me a comment.  I would like to know that this post is encouraging you to give back to the communities that we all live in.

Giving Back in February

The first Friday of every month I feature a charity here as a way of giving back.  I am proud to feature this month's charity:

 KidsHelpingKidsFixBrokenHeartsbadge

In honor of Valentine's Day and the month of love, this charity fills all the requirements of the aaawww factor.  The three oldest children of the Kladar family began this charity.  Yes, you read that correctly.  The kids started the charity for other kids.

Kladar kids

The mission of Kids Helping Kids Fix Broken Heartsa 501(c)3 Non Profit Organization, focuses on helping "children in need of lifesaving heart surgery by providing funds for transportation to a hospital, food, lodging and for procedures necessary to save or enhance their quality of life."  The money raised from donations and the sale of their dishtowels also assists in paying "for other expenses related to the surgery not covered by insurance."

"The Kladar Kids can be invited to share their experience, show a documentary about their charity and sell dishtowels for $5 each. Corporations, community organizations, churches, and schools are all places that can collectively save the life of a child and help families in need."  If you are involved in an organization and would like to help, please contact them.

For anyone that is a parent or compassionate towards children's needs, this charity will tug at your heart strings. Nothing interrupts life more than having a sick child, especially one that is in need of life-saving surgery. To have the added pressure of meeting financial obligations relieved, helps a family to focus on the recovery of their child. If you want to help out this great cause, you can purchase a dishtowel......or two or you can donate here.

By the way, "the dishtowels are purchased from a manufacturer in Michigan and sent to a local fabric store in Coeur d'Alene, ID for screen printing."

Giving Back - Open Your Karma Bank

GivingBack

At the beginning of every year, people make resolutions on how to better themselves.  My resolution began at the end of last year.  After watching CNN Heroes, I was inspired and an idea popped into my head.  While I blog about products that are made in the USA, I also believe in giving back. We are a community and, as such, we help out one another by sharing our time, talent and treasure.  My idea is to feature a charity here the first Friday of every month.

The first charity being featured is Giving Diapers, Giving Hope.

This charity resonated with me because we have been through hard times.  If it weren't for our cloth diapers, I'm not sure what we would have done to be able to afford diapers.

Giving Diapers, Giving Hope is a non-profit organization that provides education, support and cloth diapers to low income families in the continental United States. This enables families to conserve money that would have been spent on disposable diapers and use it towards other necessary expenses. It also reduces the environmental impact that disposable diapers have on landfills. We are devoted to a greener planet and empowering families and thus, primarily focus on cloth diapers.

Giving Diapers Giving Hope was founded in May of 2011 by Kristen McCarthy and Emily Glover.  Faced with the end of her unemployment assistance, Kristen reflected that were it not for cloth diapers she would not be able to diaper her two girls.  Out of playdate discussions, Kristen and Emily realized that there were other families who were likely unable to afford diapers and could not afford to invest in cloth diapers as an alternative to disposables.  From that point, the ladies talked about how they would figure out a way to meet the needs of these families.  They attended the Great Cloth Diaper Change in 2011, and asked families in attendance to donate diapers to support their cause. The ladies collected at least 60 diapers from that event.  With the additional diapers donated from Kim Rosas from Dirty Diaper Laundry, the ladies began lending diapers.  Initially, Giving Diapers Giving Hope was planned to be a local cloth diaper lending agency serving Eastern Massachusetts.  However, after mention by bloggers during the Flats Challenge in May 2011, Giving Diapers Giving Hope received many emails from individuals across the nation looking for assistance in obtaining diapers.  It was then that the decision was made to open the applications to national clients.

How the program works:

Potential clients apply via the Giving Diapers Giving Hope website.  The application asks for information about family size and income as well as the sizes of the children the applicant wishes to cloth diaper.  Applicants must upload income verification and proof of the children they wish to cloth diapers.   Applicants are able to specify their first and second choice of diapers, for example the first choice might be all in ones and the second choice might be pockets.  We don’t guarantee that we can meet client’s specifications, but we try.

What are our income guidelines?

We use the Federal WIC income guidelines.  If families are very close to qualifying but their income is just a bit over, it is likely we will still approve them.

What happens once applications are approved?

Once an application is approved the client receives an email letting them know that they have been approved as well as an invoice for postage.  Clients pay flat rate postage of $35.00.  This covers the cost of getting the diapers to the client as well as return postage for when the client is finished cloth diapering.

How many diapers do we send?

We typically send between 12-14 diapers to a family.  If a client is applying for a newborn, we send 20 newborn diapers.   Diapers can be switched out as the child grows.

Where do we get our diapers?

Diapers are donated by individual families, retailers and manufacturers.  We rely solely on donations for our diaper inventory.
 …………………………………………………………………………………..
Giving Diapers Giving Hope now serves clients in the 48 contiguous states as well as overseas military bases.  To date Giving Diapers Giving Hope has assisted almost 200 families (that’s roughly 2800 diapers!).  The day to day operations are still done by Kristen and Emily.

If you want to donate to Giving Diapers Giving Hope, please go to their Home Page {scroll down about half way down} or if you want to donate diapers and/or accessories please go to their Donate Page for information on how to help.  If you are unable to donate, grab their button and help spread the word.
